Photos

I have taken some pictures, but they were with mom's camera phone, and we can't figure out how to get them published. Once dad gets home, he will have to do it.

Mom
Mom was resting this morning, so we didn't go to see dad till this afternoon.

Picnic
We wanted to bring KFC's new grilled chicken and have a picnic with dad, but he didn't want it! He told mom to bring him a beef sandwich from Portillo's. Mom is way off schedule. It was already after lunch time, but way before dinner. I said that we would visit, and if he wanted something, I would down the street to Scooter's. She does not know how to plan anything. We stopped and got ourselves some diet pops and dad a Chocolate Milkshake at McDonald's because there's nothing for us to drink there. I'm tired of getting that coffee that is too strong!

So, mom went straight to sit outside while I went to get dad. I got a wheel chair, and he was already waiting in the hallway outside his room. He said that he wanted to walk, but I brought the wheelchair just in case. I told him that we got him a Milkshake, and he was excited, but said he didn't want the sandwich. Good thing! We sat outside for a little while, but it was pretty chilly (especially since we were drinking cold drinks).

Finally, we went inside. I offered for mom to ride in the wheel chair since dad still wanted to walk (which is good). He said he thinks the Therapist pulled his leg too far, but other than that, he doing great. We sat in the Entertainment Room, and watched T.V. until a Volunteer came in and suffocated us with her nasty, old perfume! It absolutely the worst! I couldn't even stay in there a second longer, so we went to dad's room.

Birthday/Get Well Cards
Back in dad's room, he opened the Birthday and Get Well cards that everyone sent him. "Thank You" from Bob.

Reading Materials
We brought him the newspapers and some magazines to get him through the next couple of days. Mom is going to try to visit dad before her doctor's appointment because it's on the same grounds, but I have Spanish classes smack dab in the middle of the afternoon tomorrow.

Dinner
We left just before dinner, and went to Portillo's for something quick to eat. It was pretty funny that we ran into our Primary Care Physician (PCP), Dr. Reiderman. He came over and asked how my dad was, and told my mom that she's "next!" Ringworm I was joking with mom because I have two spots on my arm that I thought might be Ring Worm. I noticed them last night, and put some Athlete's Foot cream on them. My parents told me to, so I'm not so sure about that unless the worms have foot problems. So, I said that I should tell Dr. Reiderman to look at them at Portillo's since I have no insurance. Then, while I was eating, I got a bloody nose! I've never had a bloody nose in my life! Very odd, but it seemed to pass.

Pedicure
Syd and I gave mom a pedicure.

Visit With Dad
Mom and I went to visit dad in the late afternoon because she needed to rest all day. It was nice out, so we sat outside for a little while. Medication The Nurse wanted to give dad his medicine before we went outside, and he asked for a pain pill although earlier he told us that he was fine. I don't think he should take them if he doesn't have to. I know that he likes them because he said they help him fall asleep. That's not right.

When I asked him about it outside, he said that he's "sore." Well, there's a difference between being sore and being in pain and what you can and can't tolerate. Everyone is sore after they work out.

I pushed dad in a wheel chair, and it was difficult to push uphill, but going downhill, he should have been wearing a seat belt! Goodness, I could have lost him!

Dinner
Dad wanted us to stay and eat, but we checked out the Club Level dining, and it was $25/person. That was too much money. We could go to a fancy restaurant for that price. Country Club? Now I know why mom and dad thought that Balmoral was like a Country Club when they first saw it. They went in the entrance for the Assisted Living area, which is very nice. That's where the Club Level restaurant was located. They have a gift shop, ATM, card room, etc. It's much different than dad's section. If I were mom, I would have freaked when I went to visit dad for the first time! 3rd Floor Dining We thought we might eat with dad on his floor in the dining room, but that was $18/person. Mom was not about pay that (which cracks me up because she wouldn't hesitate if the kids wanted something). Anyhow, dad called us later to tell us that the beef was tough. Mom would have been mad.

No Visitors For Dad
Mom couldn't go to work today because of her back, yet she still wanted to go to see dad. He never went to see her once when she was in the hospital (only I did and Jimmy Cesario). She was running around the house changing her mind every few minutes. She felt guilty not visiting him because she couldn't go yesterday, but I did.

Garage Sale
I was getting things ready for the garage sale next week when she told me that she was going for x-rays. So, I ended up driving her to Grayslake for that. Traffic was terrible.

Jewel
We stopped at Jewel for her prescription of Vicodin (I have the drug addict parents) and she bought a cane for dad.

Rest
Mom rested for a while.

Dr. Reiderman
Dr. Reiderman called to tell her that the results of her x-rays showed that she fractured her spine in multiple places. He wanted her to pick up the x-rays to bring with to the Arthritis doctor on Monday. Ugggh! We had to drive to Grayslake again!

X-Rays
Maybe seeing the report that they gave mom with the x-rays will be a reality check. No matter how many times Dr. Reiderman told her not to do things because her bones/spine are so fragile, she wouldn't listen. Then, she'd get hurt, and say she'd never do it again, and then she would. I would tell her not to, but did you ever try to rationalize with someone who is not rational? Now, I'm stuck with two handicapped parents! I guess we are not going to Puerto Rico now for sure!

Dad's Daily Activities
Dad called mom to tell her that he was so bored. He wants us to go there fro breakfast or dinner tomorrow. He was describing the people that he was sitting with in the lobby...."the lady who kept petting her stuffed dog," and the man who "sleeps with his head hanging down." They are all in wheel chairs just hanging out in the lobby. We seem them every time we go there. We know who they are!

Dr. Goldstein
I called Dr. Goldstein's office about dad's progress. I asked them to check with Balmoral because it doesn't seem like he's doing as well as he should, and they make the therapy optional. She said she would call them.

Harley
I took Harley to see dad this morning. No one was interested in Daisy, but wouldn't you know that someone wanted to see Harley! She seemed okay, but I was nervous, and said it wasn't a good idea. She was one of the Therapists.

Dad was sleeping again when we got there. Harley was happy to see him, but she was a little confused. She kept watching the door waiting for a doctor to come in. I think she thought I was bringing her there! Can you imagine if they had nursing homes for dogs?

Dad's bedroom was messy! His dresser drawers were left open, and there was food on the floor...Harley took care of that though.

Update
Dad said he had a bad morning because he took a shower, but they didn't bring the claw that he's supposed to use to get dressed, so he called a Nurse. Then, he said she brought him pajama bottoms that were too small....either get your own clothes together or go on a diet!

Balmoral
Dad loves the place! He was telling me how they re-paint every 5 years, and that the dining room is so nice, and the carpeting is "beautiful."

Occupational Therapy
Dad was having Occupational Therapy at 11:30 a.m., so Harley and I left right around then. She was so good (except for barking at everyone on the way home).

The Party is Over!
Dad told mom that he can come home Tuesday. She has a doctor's appointment in Lake Forest herself, so she will bring him home.

So long clean house!

Mom's Visit
Mom went to see dad this morning. She got there in a 1/2 hour. Something is wrong with that! She is lucky that she didn't get a ticket or get into an accident. She must really hate driving with dad and I!

Mom said that dad wasn't doing too well today. He said when they came to do therapy, he opted out. Hello! It's not optional unless you are very sick and thee is something wrong. I don't like this place because just because there are a lot of Alzheimer's patients, I think they are too flexible.

He called later, and said that he had some therapy this afternoon.

The Greek rehabilitation center in Wheeling called today, but I told them that he was already in a place, but I didn't like it. They said they had an opening. Mom tried to convince dad to move, but he likes it there. Of course, he likes it! Whenever he is not pressured into doing something, he likes it!

I forgot to mention that his Doctor there is Dr. Gupta. He asked if it was the one on the radio! She said they should not have removed the filter because now he'll have to be on blood thinners the rest of his life. I wish that he would have spoken up, and at least mentioned that they should check with Dr. Goldstein first because he wanted it left in.

Dining Room
Dad called mom to tell her that the dining room on his floor is now open. It has been closed for remodeling. He wants her to go and have dinner with him Friday night. She will have to try to get out of work early because dinner is at 5:45 p.m.

Boredom
Dad is so bored, he calls mom about every 15 minutes!

Grandma's Nursing Home

LOL...My 88 year old Grandma told my mom to have my dad go to her house after his rehabilitation so that she could take care of him. She can't even take care of herself. I know that she misses him not going there, but that would be pretty funny.

Tuesday, May 26th

Sorry, no time to blog yesterday!

Mom and I went to visit dad in the afternoon. He said that he had therapy 3 times, and that they said he's doing well. He thinks he might come home this weekend.

A Labradoodle named Barley came to visit before we got there. Dad liked it a lot! As a matter of fact, it's the only thing he will participate in.

When we go there, he was sitting in the hallway, so I got him a wheel chair, and we went to the entertainment room to watch T.V. A lady came to tell him about the activities and see what his interests are, and he said "no" to everything. She told him that he better be careful because the women have their eyes on him because he's the youngest one there! LOL They are Alzheimer's patients.

No Wonder It's So Weird
The lady told us that the facility is for full-time residents, and they only have a few rehabilitation patients (one is dad). That's why all of those people sit sleeping in their wheelchairs in the foyer. It's sad, but it creeps me out.

Casino
Since dad will be coming home soon, I took mom to Elgin to the casino again. They had an open upstairs balcony that circles the whole place, and I asked if I could walk up there. It's like a track. So, while mom gambled, I worked out! I walked around it 20 times!

Dinner
Dad said he didn't eat dinner, but he had corned beef for lunch. I think he's eating too many candy bars!

Memorial Day

Mom and I went early to see dad. He was resting. we brought him the laptop so that he could play the casino game for a while.

PJs
We had to go buy him more pajamas. I don't understand why he didn't prepare for this. It's not like it was an emergency surgery.

We went to the mall, had lunch (since they never confirmed the Memorial Day buffet) and then went back to visit dad again.

Dad
Dad was in bed again when we arrived. It seems like he's not doing as well now, but I think it's the place. We keep dropping hints hoping that he'll want to move to the other place, but he likes it! When we came back this afternoon, it smelled really bad. I think it was the lady in the room next to him. I couldn't even stay in there, so we went to the entertainment room, which is just a room with dining tables and a T.V. Dad watched Jeopardy and it was all mom and I could do to stay awake! We watched the news too, and then left at 4:00 p.m. because we had to exchange the Pajamas because he doesn't like light colored ones. That's why he should have gone shopping before he went into the hospital.

I had to pick up dad's legs at the same time and put them in bed because he couldn't do it, and neither could mom.

Mom brought his dirty clothes home to wash!

Sunday, May 24th

Dad said that therapy is going well, and they told him that he will probably be going home in a few days. They have his hip on ice for the swelling, but they won't call the surgeon until Tuesday because of the holiday.

Avery's 1st Birthday Party
We didn't visit dad today because we went to Avery's party, and Kelly, Elliot, and Camden were in town, so we wanted to visit with them.

Coconut Cream Pie
Dad had coconut cream pie for dessert because he knows that mom likes it, and he put it in the fridge for her when we visit tomorrow.

Memorial Day Buffet
I still never heard from anyone, and dad asked the nurse, and she said you need a reservation. The problem is that no one will make one for us! It's totally ticking me off, and once dad gets out, I am going to give them some feedback. They are not too friendly or helpful, but dad likes it there.

Saturday, May 23rd

Daisy
I brought Daisy to see dad this morning. I put her hair in a pony tail and put on her pearl collar. She looked very pretty. He was sleeping when we arrived, but she snuggled up with him in bed. I don't which one was happier to see the other!

They don't like dogs as much at Balmoral as they do when I volunteered at Winchester House. At Winchester, the residents even stocked treats for Kline, who would come every week to visit.

Daisy was a hit with the Security man who called her "Nancy!" I guess it's better than Butter Cup, which Grandma calls her.

Dad was watching a show about Eva Longoria. He said that breakfast was good. I brought him more denture cream because he thought they forgot it at the hospital.

Dr. Goldstein
I called Dr. Goldstein's office because I was worried that they took the filter out. They said that there are several doctors who have differing opinions, and neither one is right or wrong. She said that for those who prefer to remove it, they usually do so within 3 weeks of the surgery. So, I guess it's okay.

Update
Dad provided me with an update that I won't share with you. A little too much info.! He has some swelling in his legs, but they said that's normal after surgery.

He said he asked for a pain pill, and he has to wear those things on his legs to make sure that he doesn't get a blood clot. Otherwise, all is going well.

Physical Therapy
The Physical Therapist came and wanted to do therapy, but first she went and got him a walker with wheels.

They were also starting to come around with lunch, so Daisy and I left.

I don't really like this place as much as the one that my Grandma was in. They just aren't very friendly. I've tried to make a reservation for this buffet they are supposed to have on Memorial Day, but either the phone just rings, or no one returns my message.

The Other Child
Patty, John, and the kids finally showed up today! They stayed for about an hour, but my dad was getting nervous because the kids were getting antsy. I guess they didn't notice his giant stash of candy, which he made me take out of the fridge and place on top of it! I told him that people were going to steal it.

Mom
Mom paid dad a visit after work and stayed there for a while. She would have had dinner with him, but the menu the lady gave us yesterday said that it was a Tuna Sandwich, but it was Chicken Kiev. I guess that therapy went well.

Very Strange!

Today is Friday, and dad was supposed to be transferred to the Rehabilitation center at 10:00 a.m. However, he called to say that his blood count was low, so they gave him a blood transfusion (with his own blood that he donated before the surgery) and that they took the filter out! Dr. Goldstein specifically told us that it should stay in because you can even get blood clots after the surgery. We told dad that. I don't know why he didn't speak up. He never opens his mouth when he should. Now, they are picking him up this afternoon instead. Mom is going to visit him after work, but I'm not going with because she has a toothache, and has to try to squeeze that in sometime.

Harely & Daisy
Harley and Daisy miss my dad. He yells so much, so I'm not sure why.

Harley's Follow-Up Appointment
Harley had a follow-up visit with Dr. Bob today for her congestive heart failure. While we were in the office, my cell phone rang, and it was my dad wanting to see how Harley was doing. LOL I just finished telling Dr. Bob that we would be visiting my dad over the weekend. He was bored, and waiting for the medi-car to pick him up to transport him to the Rehabilitation Center.

Balmoral Rehabilitation Center
Dad arrived late afternoon. For dinner, he had Pork Roast, which he said was good. I ended up meeting mom and work and going with her to visit because I thought that tomorrow I could try to mow the lawn. Dad left his cake for us for dessert, which was a lemon bundt cake. I just had a taste since I'm back on the old diet!

His room isn't anything fancy. I think that Grandma's room at Alden was much nicer, but that was about 10 years ago. He's on the 3rd floor in a corner room overlooking the parking lot (again). There is a Library and I borrowed a book, and there is an entertainment room where people can go to watch movies. There is also a pool table. You can either eat in your room, or there is a casual restaurant on the first floor, and a formal dining restaurant on the second floor, where you are required to dress nice for dinner. I saw old men in suits! They also have an area with a large table, so if your family wants to come and visit, or bring food in, you can reserve that as well. On Memorial Day, they have a buffet from 11:00-1:00, so we are going to make reservations and bring Sydney & Sam.

Mr. Bitz called dad while we were there. The funny thing is that I was talking to the nurse, when he called, and she transferred him.

There was an old lady sitting in the lobby area on the 3rd floor with a teddy bear. I was going to talk to her as I was going to talk to the Nurse, but she told me that she "had to go to the bathroom BAD!" I saw a male and female nurse talking, so I told them, and the male nurse said he knew, but they continued talking. While I was talking to the Nurse, I interrupted her to tell her about the woman because she kept saying it! The Nurse told me that she also knew! Then, I think she could tell by my expression that I thought no one cared, so she told me that "bathroom" really meant "bedroom!" She said they would be getting them ready shortly.

Dad was waiting for a Nurse to come and check his legs because they were swollen. He didn't seem interested in us being there because he was excited that the Hockey game was on T.V. That shows how we rate!

On the way out, I asked the Nurse if dogs were allowed, and she said they absolutely were. So, I'm going to surprise dad and bring Daisy Mae. I cut the yucky, dirty fir off of her face, and I'm going to put her hair in a pony tail on top of her head and dress her up to go there. I think the old people will like her. Harley is going to be so jealous. Daisy was so mad when I took Harley to the Vet today, and I left her alone. I don't know that she's ever been home totally alone.

Daisy is very excited about going to see dad. I told her that we were going to visit him, and she can't wait!

A Clean Garage

....and it better stay that way! Dad complains about the garage being a mess, but let me tell ya!...It's his mess!!! I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. I spilled an open gallon of cider vinegar all over the floor! Unbelievable what I found in there. And, they talk about Grandma!!!

I'm surprised that we could fit 3 cars in there too!

There's still a ton of stuff that is totally unidentifiable to me, so he will have to look at it.

Thursday, May 21

Dad is going to be lonely tomorrow because mom is working and I have to clean and do yard work. Dad showed me how to drive the riding lawn mower last weekend. LOL....Sure hope I remember to put the blades down before I do the whole yard!

Harley and Daisy have been alone all day for the last two days, so I have to spend some time with them.

Hopefully, they will keep dad occupied by trying to walk again.

PLEASE CALL
If anyone has time to check in, I'm sure dad would appreciate phone calls. He has his cell phone.

Up and Walking
Dad walked to the Nurse's station this morning and also had some therapy. All those years of suffering, and wasting time! Life is too short!

I told him yesterday that he will be walking Daisy around the subdivision.

Update
Dad walked some more today and will definitely be going to Rehab tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Since he didn't bother to pack a suitcase, mom had to do it tonight. (And, who goes away without cleaning their bedroom first?) Also, he had no pajamas, and we kept asking him. Then, he gets mad at mom and tells her that she's not his mother. Then, stop acting like a child!

He said the pain is different than before surgery. It's just trying to use muscles that he hasn't used in a long time. Heck! If that's all, then that's great.

We will be going to visit him tomorrow when mom gets off of work.

Aunt Phyllis

Aunt Phyllis is so silly! She tried to write dad a message, but she didn't register first. Therefore, nothing posted.

Nursing Home for Rehabilitation

This is where dad will be on Friday (not sure for how long yet).

Day After Surgery

Dad is still doing well. He called mom this morning and said that on a scale of 1-10, his pain is a "2." He still can't eat anything as he's on a liquid diet, so that's his biggest complaint.

Sitting Up In a Chair
It's 9;34 a.m., and dad is now sitting up in a chair. He had to call to tell us because obviously, he is bored. We will be going there shortly.

Visiting Dad
Dad was sitting up in the chair when we arrived. He was filling mom in on her Soap Opera. He said that he watched them paint the top of the building across the parking lot earlier.

He has some acid reflux, but other than that, he's doing really well. He still is only eating liquids such as broth, juice, coffee without cream, Popsicles, and Jell-O. I'd starve before I'd eat the Jell-O! For dinner tonight, he can have a low-sodium diet.

They tried to get dad to walk a little, but he wasn't able to. He was extremely disappointed, but he was too weak. His blood pressure has been very low.

I told dad that soon he will be able to walk all over, and then him and mom could go to Aruba.

Dad wanted another pillow, so we had to ask for one. At home, he sleeps with about 10!

We watched the Bonnie Hunt Show.

Everyone at the hospital has been very nice so far.

Dinner
Dad called to tell mom that he had meatloaf for dinner, and that it was good. I'm sure that anything would be good if you haven't eaten in 2 days.

He said they are going to remove his oxygen tomorrow and also the epideral (for his pain medicine). He said that he hardly uses the pain button anyhow.

They gave him a sleeping pill, which I don't think is the greatest idea. That's all he needs is to get hooked on those now.

He also checked to see which casino I was taking her to. LOL

Hungry & Bored

Dad's doing really well. He called mom tonight to say that he was hungry & bored, and was going to bed.

If anyone wants to call him, he has his cell phone with him.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers!

P.S. I have to worry about everyone! Mom fell out of bed, but said she didn't get hurt. The wall did though! Now, I have to spackle and paint.

Finally in His Room!

When we went to see dad, he looked great and felt great! He had good color in his face and he wasn't in a lot of pain. He was watching Bonnie Hunt on T.V. already.

I wish I came out of surgery that well!

We didn't stay long because we wanted to beat the rush hour home, but we didn't!

On our way home, he called to tell us that he will be staying in the hospital through Thursday, and will be going to the Nursing Home for therapy on Friday.

Casino
Mom needed to relieve her stress, so I took a little nap and then took her to the casino in Aurora. Whew! That was a lot of driving in one day, but I didn't want her to go alone.

He Did It!

The ride to the hospital was annoying as usual.

Dad got reprimanded for not reading through all of the materials the doctor gave him with his instructions. What a surprise! He did nothing to prepare at all.

Good thing I came with! My parents don't pay attention to anything. They didn't have a consent form ready for the filter that they needed to insert to prevent blood clots. So, I asked, and the nurse called and was able to obtain one.

Surgery
They actually took him down at about 7:25 a.m., but his surgery didn't take place till 9:30 a.m. Not sure what the hold up was, but Dr. Goldstein had another guy before dad, and he started late! Mom and I went to the cafeteria to grab some breakfast.

They have a cool T.V. screen in the waiting area where you can monitor the progress. It's like a flight schedule at the airport. It was sooooo boring waiting. The gift shop wasn't open, so the Receptionist found me some old magazines and a newspaper. I read all of the obituaries. A Mafia guy died.

He was out of surgery around 10:30 a.m., and we met with Dr. Goldstein. Now we know why the required the filter to be put in at the last minute! Dr. Goldstein's partner lost a 48 year old patient last week due to a blood clot. He said it's so worth it to have this 10 minute procedure. He said to leave it in rather than removing it. So, dad will probably outlive us all!

Dr. Goldstein said that it would take about 90 minutes before he would be out of recovery, so we ran to Old Orchard, which is right next door. It was beautiful out, and we went to the California Pizza Kitchen. When we sat down, I was overwhelmed with the smell of peanuts. Mom switched seats with me, and she smelled it too. I think a lady next to us brought something from home for her child, but I didn't feel like dying, so we moved to a new area.

Mom's foot had a blister, so I had to trade shoes with her and go get the car on the opposite side of the mall and pick her up. It's very congested around Old Orchard!

When we returned, over two hours later, dad still wasn't out of recovery. I guess he doesn't recover well from the anesthetic like mom and I. Shortly, after we arrived, they assigned him Room 541. It's a private room with a view of the parking lot.

I didn't bring my laptop, but there is one in the waiting area on dad's floor. Yippee!

What to Wear to the Hospital

It is 9:28 p.m. and Dad just told mom that he has nothing to wear to the hospital! How ridiculous. Then, he gets mad at us!

Surgery

Surgery is scheduled for May 19th at Skokie Hospital. Prior to the hip replacement with Dr. Goldstein, Dr. Sommer's is going to put a filter in the vein in his leg to ensure that he doesn't get a blood clot. This was a last minute decision because Dr. Goldstein decided that he wasn't going to perform the surgery otherwise.

We will be there bright and early at 6:15 a.m!

He also got into the nursing home in Lake Forest, which he wanted for his therapy. It's like a Country Club. He won't want to come home (especially since he'll have no more excuses for not doing things)!
